So, no offense to whomever invented those tied elastic hairbands- actually, props, because they may just be the most overpriced accessory item ever and you guys must be making BANK! ($36 for 16 hair ties- say what!?) Anyway- I'm here to tell you, it's incredibly easy to make your own stylish elastic hairbands for a tiny fraction of the price.
It''ll take you about 10 minutes and all you need is a pair of scissors.
First, order some "fold over elastic". It comes in basically every color. The best place I've found to source it is etsy.com. I don't have any association with this particular shop, but I think their colors and prices are great, so check out Shekhinah Palace. Including shipping, their elastic costs about 40-50 cents a yard- making the cost of an elastic, I don't know, like 4 cents!? Hello.
So once you choose and purchase your elastic and it arrives (isn't it great getting fun mail)... take it out of the package and admire it for a while.
Next, cut sections of 9 inches, fold them on top of themselves and tie a tight knot toward the end. Snip a diagonal end after tying it.
A good rule of thumb is to slide the completed hairband on your wrist- it should be snug, but not tight.
If you want to make a headband, cut a section of about 20 inches (1-2 inches smaller for children), and do exactly the same thing.
Package them up nicely to make a great stocking stuffer or birthday gift. I cut a piece of cardstock and slid them on, then stamped the top (or you could add a nice sticker or ribbon).
They work well, look stylish and are snag free. Stock up and happy DIY'ing :)

I love the colors you chose! Also, check out hobovian.com for cheap trim and fast shipping! over 50 colors!! also, to stop the fraying, all you have to do is hold a lighter up to them and melt the edges (don't let the flame touch the elastic or it will burn)" i just bought some from them and when I mentioned that I found them on Pinterest they gave me 5 free yards!! Give it a shot!
ReplyDeleteIs there a certain width I should look for?

ReplyDeletethe very same foe is great to use to finish a neckline edge on a knit shirt. just fold it over the raw edge of neckline, and use a narrow stretch stitch to sew in place
